Your Sleep Is Broken After Birth. Here's How HRV Biofeedback Can Help You Recover Between Night Feeds

Nobody tells you, before you have a baby, that the hardest part of the fourth trimester isn't the lack of sleep itself. It's what happens to your body between the wakings. You get your baby back down, you lie there wired and restless, and even though your eyes are closed, you don't feel like you're actually recovering. A lot of the mothers I work with describe exactly this. Broken, not just short, sleep.

There's a physiological reason for that, and there's also a tool for working with it that most people in Singapore haven't heard of yet. It's called HRV biofeedback, and I think it deserves more attention than it gets.

What's actually happening in your body

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is the tiny variation in the time between your heartbeats. It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple. Higher variability generally means your nervous system is shifting smoothly between "alert" and "calm" as it needs to. Lower variability tends to show up when someone is stuck in a more sympathetic, wired-up state, the same state that makes it hard to fall back asleep after a 3am feed even though you're exhausted.

This matters a lot in the postpartum period. Hormonal shifts, night feeds, and the general demands of caring for a newborn all push the nervous system toward that wired state. In Singapore, confinement practices add another layer. Many mothers follow traditions around warming foods, limiting cold exposure, and staying indoors during this month, and if that's paired with using the air-conditioner sparingly, warmer nights can genuinely disrupt sleep on top of everything else. Research has shown that heat interferes with sleep continuity even outside the postpartum context, so it's not just in your head if the heat is making broken sleep feel worse.

HRV biofeedback works by giving you real-time feedback on this exact pattern. Sensors track your heart rhythm while you practice slow, paced breathing, and you can watch your own coherence, the sync between your breathing and your heart rhythm, shift in front of you. Over time this practice strengthens vagal tone, which is essentially your body's ability to downshift out of that wired state on its own.

Why this might matter more than it sounds

The research on HRV biofeedback for stress and emotional regulation is fairly established at this point. It has been shown to support parasympathetic recovery and ease the kind of physiological overactivation that keeps people from settling, alongside more stable mood and clearer thinking under pressure. A Singapore-based study found that this kind of coherence training was genuinely workable within short, realistic practice windows, not just in a lab setting, which matters when your actual free time is measured in minutes. A more recent large-scale study using a mobile HRV app also found that higher coherence scores tended to line up with more positive emotional states day to day, which is reassuring if you're wondering whether this actually translates outside a research setting.

What I like about it, compared to some of the other tools people reach for, is how little it asks of you. You don't need an uninterrupted hour, a quiet room, or specialist equipment. A few minutes of paced breathing with feedback, done before you try to fall back asleep, may support better recovery even within a short, broken sleep window. That's a realistic ask for someone who is also breastfeeding, working, and running a household.

The other pressures compounding this

Sleep disruption rarely shows up on its own. If you're approaching the end of your maternity leave, you may be feeling anticipatory anxiety about childcare, about whether your feeding plan will actually be followed once you're not there, and about how you'll manage expressing milk at work if your workplace doesn't have a proper lactation space. That last one is a real and well-documented stressor, and it's linked to both maternal stress and earlier breastfeeding cessation. Add in skipped meals on hard days, which research links to poorer mood regulation, and you have a fairly complete picture of why so many mothers feel like they're running on empty even when nothing is technically "wrong."

None of this is solved by HRV biofeedback alone, and it shouldn't be treated as a stand-alone fix. But it can be one genuinely useful piece alongside the practical changes that make the biggest difference, things like arranging for a partner to take one night feed so you get a consolidated four to five hour stretch of sleep, which supports mood and physiological recovery far more than the same number of hours broken into pieces.

Where this fits against other tools

I get asked sometimes why I'd point someone toward this instead of an app or a wearable they already have. Most mental health apps are convenient, but they don't actually measure what's happening in your body, so they can't tell you whether you're shifting out of that wired state or not. Things like EEG or more intensive neuroimaging approaches can capture that kind of detail, but they require specialist equipment and appointments that just aren't realistic for someone managing a newborn's schedule. HRV biofeedback sits in a useful middle ground. It's physiologically grounded, and it's portable enough to fit into whatever thirty seconds to five minutes you actually have.

If you want to try it, there are consumer devices and apps that measure heart rate variability and guide you through paced breathing, HeartMath is one of the more established systems, though it's worth knowing this is a general category of tool rather than one specific product you need. If you do use one, it's worth checking how your data is stored, since this is still a biometric measurement of you.

The bigger picture

This kind of tool fits well within Singapore's Healthier SG direction, which is built around prevention and self-management rather than waiting until things become a diagnosable problem. Catching autonomic dysregulation early, before it becomes something heavier, is exactly the kind of preventive thinking that approach is meant to encourage, and there's real potential for this to be built into postnatal and workplace support more formally over time.

For now, if you're in that broken-sleep, wired-but-exhausted stretch of early motherhood, know that there's a physiological reason it feels the way it does, and that there are small, realistic things you can do to help your body recover between wakings, even when you can't do anything about the wakings themselves.
